Hilda Duke Obituary

Farmville.................................Hilda Lanier Griffin Duke of Farmville died September 19, 2017. She was born at her family home in Centerville, North Carolina November 3, 1922, the first child of six children of Robert Dunham Griffin and Lilla Lanier Griffin. On April 26, 1941 she was married to Wilton Russell Duke. Mrs. Duke's husband moved the family to Farmville in July, 1952 and opened Duke Buick Co. She and her husband developed a deep and abiding love for the town and the people of Farmville. Mrs. Duke is survived by her three children, Frances Duke Moye, Wilton Russell "Rusty" Duke, Jr. and his wife, Patricia Davis "Patsy" Duke, and Dana Duke Cox, her grandchildren, Moses Williams Moye and his wife, Elizabeth McGowan Moye, Suzanne Moye Edwards and her husband, Todd Dale Edwards, Katherine Duke Teague and her husband, William Jesse Teague; Lawrence Russell Duke and his wife, Margaret Brooks Duke; and, William Griffin Duke and his wife, Jesse Coe Duke and Anna Elizabeth Moser and her husband, Robert Lane Moser. She is also survived by eleven great grandchildren, Henry Duke Edwards, Camille Moye Edwards, Moses Williams Moye III, Katherine Clare Duke, William Russell Teague, Jonathan Griffin Duke, Addison Lane Moser, Sarah Taylor Duke, Maria Layfield Duke, Davis Reese Teague and Eleanor Weathersby Duke. Their Dee (Mrs. Duke's family nickname) thought each to be precious and delighted in each one of them. Mrs. Duke was predeceased by her four brothers, Guy Livingston Griffin, Howard Lee Griffin, Fletcher Truitt Griffin and Robert Perry Griffin and her sister, Ann Griffin Jeffreys and her beloved son-in-law, Moses Williams Moye. Her husband of fifty-six years, Wilton Russell Duke, died February 5, 1998. Mrs. Duke graduated from Gold Sand High School and attended Campbell College. She devoted her life to her family and supported her husband, a successful businessman and civic leader, and she reared her three children in fear of the LORD. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor and was careful not to judge others. A celebration of the life of Hilda Duke will be held at 2:00 PM, on Friday, September 22 at Farmville First Baptist Church where she was a member and attended since July, 1952. Mrs. Duke was baptized at the age of ten years in Sandy Creek near her beloved childhood church, Centerville Baptist Church. Following the service the family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends at the family home at 3287 North Davis Drive in Farmville from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Thursday evening, September 21.
