James Deans Obituary

Greenville..................................James Otis Deans, 80, joined his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 28, 2017. He was born October 23, 1936 to Otis and Sarah Deans. James Otis married Betty Lou Highsmith in 1970. They were happily married for 47years. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Larry Deans. James Otis is survived by his loving wife Betty Lou; sons Barry (Sabrina) Deans and Eric (Laura) Deans; daughters Rhonda (Roy) McLawhorn Richardson and Sarah (David) Deans Welling; grandchildren Jason, Elizabeth, Hannah, Rachel, Bennett, Justin and Patrick; brother Cobby (Gaynell) Deans and sister-in-law Linda (Larry) Deans; and numerous other family members and friends. He was a guidance counselor at Pitt Community College from 1969 - 1995. Prior to PCC, James Otis taught high school math and science, driver's education and coached basketball. He also drove a Greyhound bus and was in the Army reserve. James Otis was a member of Arthur Christian Church where he served as deacon and board member for many years. He loved fishing, farming, reading the Bible, all things WWII, John Deer and Ford, ice cream, chocolate, his dog "Butch" and most of all his family. Graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. from Queen Anne Cemetery in Fountain by Rev. Carnie Hedgepeth. The family will receive friends at Farmville Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Special thankyou to his and Betty Lou's caregiver/ companion Angie Tyson, the staff of the Memory Care Unit at Brookdale Dickinson Avenue and Vidant Health Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.
