Nellie Lang Obituary

Farmville.....................................Nellie Mae Butler Lang was born on November 29, 1918, in Griffin, Georgia to Henry Scott and Annis Ellis Butler. Nellie's father was in the insurance business, which led to multiple moves during her childhood, with most of her early years spent in Milledgeville, Georgia. She had one older sister, Leymon Butler Holmes. When Nellie was ten, her mother Annis died, and Nellie moved to Farmville, NC to live with Leymon and her husband, John Holmes. It was during that sixth grade year in Farmville that she met who would later become her husband, Roland Lang. Nellie returned to Georgia after that sixth grade year to be with her father and stepmother Nora, and continue her schooling. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and completed a degree in business and extensive study in music and voice, touring with the college A Cappella Choir. Upon graduating, she moved to Farmville and worked briefly at Farmville Furniture Store, then was recruited to work as secretary to the president at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. After two years, she returned to Farmville. It was during this time that she was reacquainted with Roland, whom she married on April 2, 1946 after his service in the Army and World War II. Nellie and Roland made their life together in Farmville in the house they built in 1948 on Contentnea Street and where they lived throughout their entire marriage and raised their three children. She worked many years for A.C. Monk and Company, with Roland in the restaurant business, and as office manager for the late Congressman Walter B. Jones. She was devoted to her church, Farmville United Methodist Church, where she held numerous positions and was immersed in the church's music program. Nellie continued to live in her house on Contentnea Street following the death of Roland in 1992, until she moved to assisted living in Greenville in May of 2014. In August 2016, she moved to Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton where she lived until she passed away on December 27, 2016. Nellie is survived by her three children, Roland Scott Lang (Jo Ann) of Farmville, Mary Lang Hunter (Richard) of Warrenton, and Barbara Lang Holbrook (Bob) of Canton, Georgia, and six grandchildren, Jessica Lang, Sarah Lang, Lang Hunter, Ben Hunter, Albert Smith and Alex Smith, and two step-granddaughters, Leigh and Caroline Holbrook. She took special pride in remembering the birthdays of her nine great-grandchildren.
