Vella Thigpen Mangum

Rocky Mount.......................Vella Thigpen Mangum, age 75, passed away Monday, July 31, 2017. Funeral service will be conducted Friday at 12:00 P.M. from the First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount by Rev. William V. Grisham. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 until 12:00 P.M. Vella was a devoted wife to her husband of 53 years, loved her two children dearly, and adored her four grandchildren. A member of First Baptist Church in Rocky Mount for 45 years, she gave much time to serving others through Meals on Wheels and her card outreach program. When not reaching out to others, she could be found gardening, visiting family and splitting her time between the mountains and the beach. She touched countless lives and will be deeply missed. She is survived by her husband, Grant Mangum of the home; sons, Kevin Mangum and wife, Laura of Greenville and Kirk Mangum and wife, Courtney of Durham; grandchildren, Ryan Mangum, Lyndsay Mangum, Abbie Mangum, and Harris Mangum. The oldest of eight, she is further survived by five sisters, Linda Little of Raleigh, Ellen Jahn and husband, Larry of Cary, Emily Booth and husband, Bill of Wilmington, Katrina Moore and husband, Don of Lake City, S.C., and Wendy Stogner and husband, Phil of Charleston, S.C.; and brother, Clay Thigpen of Turbeville, S.C. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount, 200 South Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or Meals on Wheels, 1501 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
