Elizabeth Borum Obituary

Farmville.............................Elizabeth Smith Borum, 77, of Farmville passed away Wednesday, May 4th after a short illness. She was born January 15, 1939 in Pitt County, daughter of the late Henry Tyson and Cleo Lewis Smith. Elizabeth is survived by her two children, Tyson Borum of Wilmington and Robin Borum of Arlington, VA; brother, Edward Tyson Smith and wife, Georgia of Greenville; brother, Henry Lewis Smith and wife, Tracey of Farmville/ Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Mason Borum, Caroline Borum, and Emily Elizabeth Borum; and nieces and nephew, Hannah Smith, Paige Richie, and Tyson Smith. Elizabeth is also survived by 21 first cousins throughout the United States. Elizabeth graduated from Farmville High School and East Carolina College, with a BS degree in education. Elizabeth was honored as an outstanding teacher in the Hopewell, VA and Prince George County school systems. She later served as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.. She ended her career as a GS15 from the Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems. Her interests in the history of her ancestors from various eastern North Carolina families, including the May, Tyson, Yelverton, Smith, and Peacock families, led to her dedicated involvement in genealogical organizations. These organizations included: First Families of North Carolina (Board of Directors), Pitt County Historical Society (Board of Directors), Major Benjamin May Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (vice regent), Colonial Dames of America, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of the American Colonies, and Tyson-May Family Reunion (president). In addition, she was a member of the May Museum Advisory Board, Farmville Literary Club, Farmville Home and Lawn Garden Club, and CLIO Book Club of Greenville. Elizabeth was also an avid bridge player. Family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Farmville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 at Farmville United Methodist Church, with a reception immediately following in the church fellowship hall. A private interment will be held at Hollywood Cemetery.
