Bennie "Mitchell" Thigpen

Fountain……………………………Bennie “Mitchell” Thigpen, age 70, passed away Friday, December 31, 2021 at The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.

Mitchell was born April 12, 1951 near Fountain, NC in Pitt County, to Bennie and Lorraine Baker Thigpen.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Seoul, South Korea during the Vietnam War.  He worked with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Department and retired as sergeant from the Farmville Police Department.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his wife and his friends.  In most recent years he enjoyed riding his golf cart around town.  One of his favorite pastimes was playing his guitar and singing.

He was a past member of Edgewood Freewill Baptist Church near Crisp and more recently Fountain Baptist Church.

Mitchell was a three time cancer survivor, overcoming non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, kidney cancer and prostate cancer through surgeries, treatments and the grace of God.  But his greatest battle with pancreatic cancer could not be overcome.  Because of Mitchell’s faith in Jesus, his Savior and His promise of a home in heaven, he had “the peace of God that passeth all understanding” (KJV).

Honoring Mitchell’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Spencer Thigpen, sister-in-law, Patricia Armitage and husband, Bill of Farmville, niece, Michele Cox and husband, Glenn of Wilson, great nephew, Kyle Cox and wife Teresa of Rocky Mount, great niece, Kaitlin Cox and fiance, Tylon Hodges of Greenville, brother-in-law, Graham Spencer and wife, Sharon, sister-in-law, Merita Spencer, brother-in-law, Carl Spencer and wife Elaine, all of Fairfield, NC, aunts, Dorothy Baker of Raleigh and Lois Harris of Greenville, uncle, Guy Owens of Wilson and numerous other nephews and nieces.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Lorraine Thigpen, brother, Harvey Thigpen, brother-in-law, David Spencer, uncle, J.L Baker and aunt, Marie Owens.

The family expresses heart-felt appreciation to the staff of Vidant Home Health and Hospice and Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice for their kind and loving care and to family and friends for their love, prayers and support during this very difficult journey.
