Bobby Skinner Obituary

Farmville……………………………Bobby Steel Skinner, age 85, entered his heavenly home on October 17, 2021 at Vidant Medical Center.  He was born on July 27, 1936 to the late Earl and Iodest Skinner, the fifth of six children.

Bobby was a hard-working, kind, loyal Christian man who thoroughly enjoyed helping others. He was educated in the Greene County Schools and graduated from Maury High School. His working career began when he was eleven years old and continued throughout high school at Grimsley Store doing whatever needed. He was an excellent driver and loved to drive, which probably stemmed from his high school days of driving a school bus. Upon high school graduation, Bobby went to work at Pitt and Greene REA and while employed there, he married the love of his life, Gwen Batten. Not too long after their marriage he was drafted into the United States Army, served a tour in Germany, and later the North Carolina Army National Guard. After being discharged from the Army, he began employment with Dupont in Kinston, NC and worked there until his retirement with 34 years of service.

Bobby’s love of people and desire and concern to help others led him to become a founding member of the Farmville Rescue Squad which he actively served with his wife Gwen by his side for 30 years, from which they both retired. During his work with the Rescue Squad, he received Farmville Rescue Member of the year multiple times. Other civic duties include being an active member of the Farmville Lions Club for 28 years where he was Lion of the Year in 2007 and 2010. Bobby also volunteered with delivering Meals on Wheels and faithfully did so for over 20 years. He was a member of the Marlboro Original Free Will Baptist church and active in the Bible Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Laymen’s League, Usher Board and was always willing to help with youth activities, feed the football teams, landscape committee or do whatever he could to help. The times he spent with his church family were very dear to him. Some other things he loved were gospel music, yard sales, traveling (especially to Cragmont and the mountains), and NASCAR racing.

Bobby leaves to cherish memories to his loving wife of 63 years, Gwen Skinner, nieces and nephews, cousins, many friends, and his “fur baby” Mia.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 23, at 3:00 P.M. at Marlboro Original Free Will Baptist Church Sanctuary, by Rev. Jeff Toler.

Memorials may be made to Marlboro Original Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 694, Farmville, NC 27828.
