Farmville…………………..Essie “Marie” Woolard Cowan, age 95, passed away Thursday December 18, 2025.
A graveside service will be held Monday December 22, at 11:00 A.M. at Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville by Rev. Rocky Stone. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. Those desiring to pay their respects may do so Sunday December 21 at the Farmville Funeral Home from 11:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. for viewing hours.
Mrs. Cowan was born to the late Jack and Essie Woolard. She was a Washington Native and graduated from Washington High School with honors. She married James Louis Cowan and moved to Farmville in 1956. Marie was a member of the First Christian Church of Farmville, loved reading, bird watching, and spending time with her family. She worked for 15 years at A.C. Monk Tobacco Company and for 17 years at Little Red School. Her time at Little Red School and watching those children grow-up were one of her greatest joys in life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Louis Cowan; son, Jimmy Cowan; grandson. Jamie Cowan; and seven brothers and 1 sister.
Mrs. Cowan is survived by her son, Gary Cowan and wife, Vickie of Louisburg; daughter-in-law, Angie Cowan of Farmville; grandchildren, Caroline Davenport (Bob), Simone Barnes, Jonathon Cowan (Alicia), Ellen Davis (Michael), and Jameson Cowan (Macy); great-grandchildren, Jamie Jernigan (Hunter), Becca Ripper (Easton), Hannah Cowan, Julia Davis, Bryson Barnes, Liam Barnes, and Ruth Marie Cowan; one great great-grandchild on the way, Haven Sawyer Jernigan; special niece, Wanda Mauney; and special friend, Demetrius Willoughby.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Farmville Benevolent Ministries, 4138 Grimmersburg Street, Farmville, NC 27828, checks should be made payable to FBM, or to Gentiva Hospice.
