Farmville………………………Janie Elizabeth Barnette Joyner, age 101, passed away February 5, 2026, a few days before her 102nd birthday.
Janie Joyner, born Janie Elizabeth Barnette, was born February 28, 1924, in Rocky Mount to the late Vernon Lee Barnette and Ida Burdette. Janie graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1942 then later graduated from nursing school at Spartanburg General Hospital in Spartanburg, SC. Janie married Charles Augustus Joyner, Sr. on May 10, 1947, and shared a wonderful 53 years of marriage.
Janie worked for Dr. Fitzgerald then Pitt Memorial Hospital in the emergency room before working as surgical room supervisor. She was AM Mumford’s surgical nurse until his retirement. At that time, she continued her nursing career as an OBGYN nurse at Vidant Medical Center.
In her later years she moved to the Barclay House of Tarboro then, as her health started to decline, Edgecombe Health Center. She was a retired registered nurse and loved playing bridge. She was a member of the Farmville Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Boyd Lee Barnette and sister, Inez Williams.
She was a loving mother and is survived by daughter Nancy Joyner Duddy; sons, Charles Augustus Joyner Jr. (Donna) and David Barnette Joyner (Pat); three grandchildren, Dannel Charles Duddy (Cameron), Cristin Anne Duddy and Christopher David Joyner; two great-granddaughters, Margaret Alice Duddy and Caroline Jane Duddy; sister-in-law Willa May Joyner and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Monday, February 9 at 2:00 P.M at the Farmville Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Morgan Daughty. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
