Jason Cockrell Obituary

Jason Lee Cockrell, age 49, of Wilson, North Carolina, spent his last days exactly how he lived, surrounded by the family he loved fiercely. Some sources insist he was last seen bravely wrestling Bigfoot somewhere deep in the woods. Authorities have yet to confirm the details, but those who knew Jason agree this sounds exactly like something he would do.

Jason was strong-willed, dependable, endlessly loving, and always a kid at heart. He had a way of showing up for others that made people feel seen, supported, and never alone. Whether you needed help, encouragement, or just someone to laugh with, Jason was there.

He found joy in the things that made life feel like an adventure. From the discipline of Sambo wrestling to the thrill of geocaching and the creativity of graphic design, Jason brought curiosity and heart into everything he did. He loved stories that sparked imagination, especially Transformers (with Optimus Prime leading the way), Scooby-Doo mysteries, Lost, Stranger Things, The Office, and a well-timed horror movie.

Of all the roles Jason played in life, his favorite was being a husband and father.

He leaves behind his #amazingfantasticwife, Candice, and his four children: Owen, Brennan, Emberlee, and Izzie, who were the center of his universe. Jason had a remarkable way of truly showing up for his family. He laughed with them, felt deeply with them, and made sure they always knew they were loved.

He is also survived by his mother, Geraldine.

Jason was preceded in death by his father, Frank, and his brother, Scott, who we imagine welcomed him with open arms and probably a few jokes ready.

There will be no formal funeral service. Instead, Jason’s family plans to hold a celebration of life at a later date where stories, laughter, and memories will be shared the way Jason would have wanted.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Jason in a way he would appreciate: go on an adventure, hide or find a geocache, watch your favorite episode of The Office, introduce a kid to Scooby-Doo, or simply show up for the people you love.

After all, if Jason taught us anything, it’s that the real heroes are the ones who show up for their family every single time.

And if anyone happens to spot Bigfoot looking a little beat up, please let us know.

To Owen, Brennan, Emberlee, and Izzie: Remember that bravery isn’t about never being scared. It’s about showing up anyway. I’ll always be proud of you. I love you.

Roll out.
