Jerry Flanagan Obituary

Jerry Harold Flanagan, 65, passed away, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, unexpectedly at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Farmville sharing his love for God, family, friends, our country, community, local youth, and nature.

Jerry was born on December 21,1957, in Pitt County to Harold Moffitt and Alawoise Strickland Flanagan. Growing up on the family farm, Jerry developed many lifelong passions, including his love for animals and wildlife, the outdoors, and farming. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to helping others through service and mentorship. All who knew him, knew his life ran on “Jerry Flanagan time”. Whether he was late to school as a school bus driver or losing track of time cruising around town in his truck, Jerry was never in a hurry or worried about being late. But you could count on him being there when you needed him.

He graduated in 1976 from Farmville Central High School and lettered in wrestling, track, and football. He attended East Carolina University as a freshman before transferring to NC State University to major in Animal Science.

Some will remember him for always wearing his black cowboy hat, but he actually wore many hats during his life including master beekeeper, founder of the Tar River Beekeepers Association, wrestling coach, farmer, hunter, horse whisperer, snake wrangler, cook (“chef extraordinaire”), outdoorsman, Eagle Scout, lifelong leader/supporter of the Boy Scouts, recipient of the District Award of Merit (2017), lifelong member of First Christian Church of Farmville, active member of Friends of the NRA, dedicated sponsor & coach of the Farmville Wildlife Competition Team, clerk at the East Carolina Stockyard, President of the Pitt County Cattlemen's Association, cofounder of the Beast Feast (East Carolina Council Wild Game Dinner), writer/poet, storyteller, and hero.

Jerry was influential in the lives of all who came in contact with him providing endless love and support in just the right way at just the right time. To every individual he met, he meant something different. He knew no stranger, always left you with more knowledge than you came to him with, and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. His loving heart, comforting personality, and countless stories will be missed by all.

Jerry, “Hot Dog”, Uncle G, GrandJerry, Grandaddy Flanagan, and Hoho - whatever you called him, his legacy will live on through his unforgettable stories, larger than life adventures, friends and loving family including his beloved father, Harold Moffitt Flanagan; loving partner, Susan Laughinghouse; mother of his children, Gloria Flanagan; children, Caroline (Bob) Davenport, Jeremy (Kristen) Flanagan, Jake (Jama) Flanagan, Sarah (Travis) Brann; grandchildren, Jamie (Hunter), Becca (Easton), Jase, Braylen, Jessa, Tucker, Amara, Ellie, Jamie Faye; siblings, Gayle (Ed) Bonner, Scott (Lynn) Flanagan, Mark (Betsy) Flanagan; nieces, Allison (Michael), Leigh-Kathryn (Jeremy), Holly (Matthew), Mallory; nephews, Arch, Jack, Sam; wingman, Weezy Flanagan, and many friends who were family by loving choice.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Alawoise Strickland Flanagan.

In his memory, “do a good turn daily” to help others in need without expecting anything in return.
