On May 20, 2025, Kenneth Roy Cherry of Kenly, North Carolina, passed peacefully, with his wife by his side, at the Elizabeth House Hospice in Flat Rock, NC. He was born on November 26, 1949 in Greenville, North Carolina, to the late Cecil and Mavis Cherry and was raised in Greene and Pitt County, North Carolina.
Kenneth leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife of 53 years, Brenda, his son Brenton, and daughter-in-law, Kirstie, his daughter, Lori Beth, and two grandchildren, Cody Phelps, and Destiny Cherry, as well as a very special friend, Debbie Davenport.
Kenneth graduated from Farmville High School in 1968. He attended several classes at East Carolina University where he met his wife Brenda and served in the Army Reserves from 1968-1974. Kenneth worked in telecommunications for Carolina Telephone for 33 years. He held several positions including testing and assignment, staff positions in the home office, management positions in Marketing, and retired as a Customer Service Supervisor. Kenneth was a devoted employee and strived for strong performance in all those positions until early retirement in 2001 due to health problems. He always said “if you were on-time you were late.”
Kenneth married Brenda Harper in 1972, and, together they were committed to each other and dedicated parents to Brenton and Lori Beth. He enjoyed camping, boating, waterskiing, and travelling across the country with their camper as their children grew. He had a welcoming and fun-loving personality who always had a joke for anyone around. He was also a hands-on personality who was determined to build or fix anything. In his later years, Kenneth’s favorite past time was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, spending time at their second home in Maggie Valley, and spending time with his grandson, Cody. He and his wife, Brenda, have special memories riding and exploring the Great Smokey Mountains once their children were grown and had many more memories with their children and grandchildren at their mountain home.
