Martha Eleanor "Byrd" Shelton Letchworth

Mrs. Martha Eleanor (Byrd) Shelton Letchworth, age 95, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024, surrounded by her family. A native of Greene County, she was born November 18, 1928, the daughter of Larry and Eleanor Shelton.

Byrd was known all her life as an excellent cook and her fried chicken was famous throughout Greene County. She grew up in the Walstonburg Christian Church and was a member until her marriage to Norman Letchworth in 1946. Shortly thereafter she became a member of Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her death.

Byrd’s surviving family includes her sons, Mike Letchworth and wife, Ann, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Jeff Letchworth and wife, Rita, of Walstonburg; grandchildren, Matt Letchworth and wife, Amanda, of St. Louis, Missouri, Brooks Letchworth and wife, Manisha, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Sara Sanacore and husband, Mike, of Wellington, Florida, and Rebecca Letchworth of Greenville; great-grandchildren Camden and Harper Letchworth; chosen sister Lib Cunningham of Walstonburg; and special caregivers Janet Joyner, Wendy Avery, and Chris Harris.

In addition to her parents, Byrd was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Norman Letchworth; brothers Lenward Shelton and John Shelton; and sisters Helen Gay, Mary Davenport, and Carrie Lee Sermons.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11am Monday, March 4, at Farmville Funeral Home with the Reverends Dr. David Hines and Stephen Prescott officiating. Committal Services will immediately follow at the Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Farmville. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11am at Farmville Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jeff and Rita Letchworth.
