Rita Lyder Obituary

Greenvilleâ₦â₦â₦â₦â₦â₦â₦.Rita Miriam Lyder, 93, died on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Vidant Medical Center. She was a resident of Cypress Glen Retirement Community. Miriam (as she was known to family and friends) was born on November 24, 1921 in New York to Thomas Devine and Agnes Barrett Devine. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY, she went on to study at Hunter College in New York City. In 1943, she married Raymond Lyder whom she met while working for Burroughs Wellcome Co. in Tuckahoe, NY. The couple moved to Greenville in 1970. During their long marriage, Miriam raised three children, was the winner of a creative writing competition, led a Girl Scout troop, and volunteered for numerous church and social activities. She inspired her daughter Robertaââ‚â„¢s eventual establishment of the first hospice in a United States hospital with the care she provided to Roberta during a serious illness in 1972. Miriam had a brilliant mind. She was an avid reader, an accomplished duplicate bridge player, and had a sharp sense of humor. Miriam was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 56 years, Raymond; brother, Thomas; sister, Rosemary; and great granddaughter Sophia. She is survived by her daughters, Roberta Paige (Addison) of Portsmouth VA; Jane Lyder (Alan Palisoul) of Bethesda, MD; and Alison Lyder (Corwin Hisle) of Minneapolis, MN; her grandchildren Sean, Katherine, Rachel, Marguerite, and Christopher, and her great granddaughters London, Evelyn, Emlyn, and Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 2 pm on Saturday June 13 at St Peterââ‚â„¢s Catholic Church with a reception at 4:30 pm in the Four Seasons Room at Cypress Glen Retirement Community. Donations may be made in her memory to the Benevolent Care Fund, Cypress Glen Retirement Community, 100 Hickory St, Greenville, NC 27858 or the St. Francis de Paul Society Food Bank, 2700 East Fourth St, Greenville, NC 27858. Finally, the family would like to express its gratitude to the staff and residents of Cypress Glen who provided Miriam with a loving family in Greenville and to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Vidant Medical Center for the compassionate care they gave to her in her last days.
